This blog (Nima Heydarian) has my favorite theme for a personal WordPress site. It’s really simple, easy to read, and doesn’t scare people off. I had this coded for me over a year ago. I’m thinking about cleaning the code and making available as a downloadable theme.

Gazette Theme ($70.00)

Gazette theme is from Woo Themes. They also have a good number of WordPress themes for sale. I run Biomedical News on the Gazette theme. I wanted a theme that looks like a news website allowing me to show the last 10 articles or so on the homepage with a “featured” story feature. This theme has all of those. It is also very customizable from the admin area. It has a lot of SEO plugs built into it as well but I usually install all of those on my own.

Escrow Transaction Dispute

I bought a second website over a week ago from Flippa. The seller claimed over 10,000 unique visitors a month and over $500 revenue a month. After the sale completion I sent the payment via Escrow. The seller sent me the files and transferred the domain name on GoDaddy.

I put the site on my server with my ad codes. Escrow transaction entered into its inspection period. Site made about $10 a day (screen shot below) average while I had. It wasn’t what was claimed on the sale. I couldn’t confirm the traffic on the site either. I installed Google Analytics and WordPress Site Stats plugin neither one of which could confirm more than 15 visitors a day (far from the 10,000 a month). AWStats on my server wasn’t any different either.

The seller couldn’t do anything to show me otherwise either. Once I couldn’t verify the traffic I was doubtful of the clicks (on the ads) to be real clicks. After giving it few days I decided to call the sale off and rejected the Escrow transaction. I returned the site’s ownership to the owner in GoDaddy. After he received the domain and changed the ad codes he rejected the return of the site (on Escrow). He basically said I did not return the site to him.

I contacted him for his reason but he hasn’t replied yet. I’m assuming he wants me to send him the revenue from the few days that I had the website. I had already told him that I would send him all the revenue minus the Escrow fees that I have to pay once the return is completed. The total income during the inspection period was $62.61. The Escrow fees were $22.10. So I owe the owner $40.51. I think its pretty reasonable that I don’t want to send the money until my $1700 in Escrow frees.

I searched the Escrow website and found their policy on the disputed sale. Hopefully the return transaction won’t get messy.

AutomationFieldEngineer Moved to Automation News

I started Automation Field Engineer.com in January 2010 after I started working as a full time automation and control engineer at Rockwell Automation. As time progressed the nature of the articles on the site shifted to news regarding the automation industry (financial news, new orders companies were getting, new products coming out, etc). There are also three new writers on board for the site too that write about the automation industry’s news.

So last week I decided to move the site from AutomationFieldEngineer.com to a new domain Automation News .org. I was rather excited when I saw the domain name was available. So far we’ve had over 100 articles published and are publishing at least one news article every week day.

Biomedical Engineering Blog Re-Energized

I started Biomedical Engineering Blog about 3 years ago when I was doing a research in the biomedical engineering department at Purdue. I stopped posting news and articles on the site after I was done with the research. I did keep the website live and had Google Analytics and (lately) FeedBurner installed on it. Without me writing any new articles since few years ago Biomedical Blog had over 40 feed subscribers which is pretty good considering the no update issue and its unique niche.

About a month ago I decided to re-energize the site and put some investment into it. My plan is to make the site a great resource for biomedical research and business news source. So

I bought a new wordpress theme
Started writing regular articles myself
Hired three new writers with medical or biomedical engineering degree or research experience

Right now the site has almost a 1000 unique visitors a month and has a 56 feedburner count. My first goal is to bring 2000 uniques / month by end of August.

PHP Galleria Site Flipping 4

I bought PHP Galleria a little over a week ago and have been working on improving it. Today I spent my entire Saturday on implementing new changes. Right now most of the site’s traffic comes referring websites and not much organic. Site lacked even the basic search engine optimization requirement when I bought it. I’m hoping the changes I’ve been making will change that and possibly double the site’s traffic or more.

Following is a list of the newest updates:

Implemented a SEO title change for the homepage and product’s pages.
Added a custom 404 page
Added and setup demo pages for all the scripts
Changed the site’s homepage title from “PHP Galleria” to “Buy Website PHP Scripts – PHP Galleria”
Changed the product’s info pages title from “PHP Galleria” to “Products Name – PHP Galleria”.
Added meta description and keyword to both homepage and product pages.
Added a demo button to the product’s page. There was a text link to the demos before but not a clear button.
Installed Google Sitemap Feed add-on and submitted the feeds to Google Webmaster Tools.
Installed Automatic Thumbnail Creator to reduce the size of thumbnail images and of the pages loading.
Added a favicon to the site.

I bought PHP Galleria last week and have been working on improving the site. This is the second post in tracking its progress. Following are the latest updates (since the previous ones):

Edited the .htaccess file to redirect http://phpgalleria.com to http://www.phpgalleria.com
Edited the .htaccess file to redirect index.php to the root directory “/”
Added “H1″ tag to the product pages (ex. This Day in Sports Script) for better SEO

It doesn’t seem like much but I spent a lot of time installing two add-ons and had to un-install them due to unexpected results.

How to Exclude Your Own Traffic From Google Analytics

This is pretty basic but I had never done it. If you do a lot of work on your website(s) you might want to exclude your own IP address from Google Analytics to ensure more accurate data.

Simply go to Google Analytics
In the bottom of the page find the link to “Filters”
Create a new filter based on your IP address

Malicious Malware

Yesterday I found a major problem with the files of the website. The files had a malicious malware in them. Once I uploaded the files and Google browsed it, the site got flagged and was giving malware warnings to the visitors. This would have destroyed the site and any possible income.

So I talked with the previous owner and decided the solution would be to move the site to a new domain. I agreed to keep the site and finish the escrow transfer if I could get $400 of my money back. It was a bad situation both for me and the owner. Apparently many GoDaddy site (previous hosting of the site) were attacked and that’s where the malware had come from. The owner was understanding and we made the deal.

I talked to one of my friends and he told me to fix the problem and request a review from Google instead of 301 redirecting the domain name. I did that. We’ll see if it produces any result.

Updates So Far

So far I’ve bought a new template for PHP Galleria from Template Monster. I uploaded the template and made the following changes:

Updated the logo
Added Google Analytics
Added new categories and moved the products around for better store organization
Added Timsar Solutions credentials
Added terms of use page (required if an online store wants to process credit cards)
Added a privacy page (required if an online store wants to process credit cards)
Added shipping and return policy
Install Ultimate SEO URL for osCommerce

It’s late already. I’ll work on the rest tomorrow.
