Replacing IBM R50e Memory Card

by Nima on 27 November, 2006

I bought a 512MB memory card for my IBM laptop over two months ago. I knew my computer had two slots for memory. It had one 512 and one 256. So I was going to change the 256 with my new 512.

When I looked at the back of the laptop (where most of the memories are located at), I found the 512 memory easily, however there was no 256 (there was only one slot).

So I gave up, until today. I opened the laptop hoping to find the other memory slot and replace it. Indeed, I found it hidden under the keyboard (had to completely open the whole thing).

Here are some pictures of the open laptop. I thought to make this post for those who want to change their R50e laptop memory and can not find the second slot:

Excellent! I have just bought a 512MB chip and discovered there is nowhere to plug it into. That is, until I found your website! This is a double bonus as the old 256MB chip will now go into my daughter’s NEC laptop so she gets more RAM too. Thank you!

Thanks for the pictures, I guessed it was under the keyboard, but I wanted to see an actual picture of it opened.

Just to let you guys know. You don’t have to pull the back off of the laptop. All you have to do is turn off the laptop, remove the battery, remove the screws on the bottom of the laptop with the keyboard symbol next to them.

Turn the machine back over and lift off your keyboard and this will reveal you memory slot.

Nima, you are brilliant! Thank you, who would have thought that that is what those stupid little pitures next to the screws are for, and that the bloody other RAM slot is on the opposite side of the motherboard. Wow. x
